Landscape and History

Field pattern in Upper Nidderdale Temple of Piety, Studley Royal Lead mining landscape, Greenhow River Nidd, Darley

The impulse to know more about the place in which we live is old and enduring. There is a long standing antiquarian tradition in the area and at the present time much interest, among both ‘locals’ and visitors, in its landscape, its flora and fauna and its history. There is a curiosity about the forces which shaped the landscape and the story told by the tangible remains of the past - the field patterns, mills and houses. There is real affection - and concern - for the fragile ecology which gives the valley its character.

Nidderdale.org seeks to describe the landscape and history of the dale and in so doing come to a better understanding of the forces that have shaped, and continue to shape, the place where we live. Contributions to the site are welcome from any who have an interest in the dale, with authorship and copyright fully acknowledged.
